While painted MDF is usually the most suitable material, hardwood is used where appropriate, as with desk tops, shelf fronts and smaller free-standing pieces.
Most projects entail some degree of matching to the room, whether simply using the established heights or mouldings. In some cases this means copying the style of an existing cupboard, bookcase or kitchen, and making a new piece to match, whether a mirror image or as an extension of the original project.
